Winner of the Alternative Furniture Contest (from below)

Shawn,

What’s up, dude? I just hopped on to your blog at work and saw that my comment won. That is so rad.. thanks! Definately the best present I received for my birthday this year, considering it was just yesterday and all I received was clothes and the board game Battleship (timeless classic… I cannot believe that I never owned it when I was younger).
Thanks again for the bag and, more importantly, envisioning LoveSac. I have been following you guys in the news for a while now and am glad things are working out again. You are an inspiration. Best of luck with the company and the G2 release. I’ll be one of the first in line to snag one as long as I can convince my fiance that we need it in addition to the two Supers that we own. She will cave once she experiences the lap of luxury that is the G2.

Take care,
Wes

Which store has the “hottest” staff - you decide….

Every year I get out and work in every store in the country. “Operation Front Line” where I (and key members of the home office) go out and work in each store, do a bit of training with each staff, and basically learn to appreciate those on the “front lines” who work so hard to spread the love to the rest of the world. I love these Sac’rs and I am most grateful for all of their hard work in the stores. It’s hard, you know. I know. I worked the first 10 stores myself. The first store, the Gateway, opened over 5 years ago now, and my cousin and I worked 7 days a week, nearly 12 hours a day, repeating the same lines, over and over again, trying to convince people that we were for real, and LoveSac was here to stay.

Well, we’ve made it somewhere, I guess, but we have a long way to go. So we keep on training, keep on selling, keep on learning, and keep on thanking those who work so hard to help us as we try to make something great again, for the world. So far Chad & I have been to 3 stores with many more to go.

So YOU TELL ME….WHICH LOVESAC STORE HAS THE “HOTTEST” STAFF? Now, “hotness” is not a requirement to work at LoveSac. In fact, “Hotness” really is in the eye of the beholder, because I am not just talking about good looks here. If you can see real worth, charisma, character or potential in an individual’s (or entire staff’s) eyes through these snapshots, then let that be your guide. But YOUR OPINION MATTERS….so let me hear it: WHICH STORE HAS THE “HOTTEST” STAFF? AND WHY??? It’s not just votes–but the quality of the votes! The winningest staff will EACH get their choice of one of the new LoveSac t-shirts, sent to them by me. These new Ts are now available in all stores for you to check out as well! A CHARITABLE WEEKEND WITH RICHARD BRANSON

Sara Blakely & Richard Branson on stage

I spent this weekend in Atlanta, attending the new Sara Blakely Foundation launch party. If you remember on the show, The Rebel Billionaire, after I was presented with the Million Dollar prize, Sara was presented with $750,000 with which to build a charity foundation. It has been long in the making, but has now taken form, and the Sara Blakely Foundation is currently educating women all over the world–furthering the cause of elevating less fortunate women’s status in places where opportunities are limited. Check out

Tiffany and I had the good fortune to attend, and hang out with celbs also in attendance like: Jewell, Andre 3000 of Outkast, Jane Fonda, one of the Backstreet Boys, Collective Soul, and of course, my man, Sir Richard Branson of Virgin. The dinner was exclusive–and all of the proceeds from the 200 or so attendees’ dinners went to pay for the college education a specific woman in Africa for an entire year! The speeches and presentations were amazing. Richard was interviewed on stage, and told a hilarious story about his first experience with Jane Fonda that resulted in torn stitches.

Jewell played for the intimate dinner setting, and as much as I would not consider myself a Jewell fan, she was INCREDIBLE….blew the place away. Afterwards, we all walked from the Atlanta Ritz, across the street to the old Macy’s building where there was a party of 1100 waiting to rock out to numerous stage acts, wrapped up by Collective Soul.

Ed
Ed from Collective Soul, and our cute wives

As it turns out, the lead singer of Collective Soul, Ed, is a huge fan of the Sac. He own a few of them. He and his cute wife claim that their dog would NEVER sleep on anything else meant for him, until they got an actual LoveSac DoggyBag. (We are not currently making them–they’re in re-design, but people that have them do swear by them). We’ll visit Ed at home sometime and maybe do a photo shoot of his Sac pad.

Hangin’ with Richard Branson and the cast of the Rebel Billionaire

Anyway, it was a great weekend. It was way cool to see the whole cast of the Rebel Billionaire again, and it was especially good to catch up with Richard Branson again. It’s been too long. But while he’s out saving the world (literally–you all know he just gave $3 BILLION to the cause of global warming!?), I, and the rest of the working world, are still just trying to make it.

Making a FULL BODY CAST more comfortable…

About 6 weeks ago my little 2 1/2 year old grandson, Austin, fell while on a family camping trip. He broke his femur and ended up in a full body cast. Love Sac was a God send to him and his family. It allowed him to be able to partially sit up to eat, play, and to sleep. Otherwise he was flat on his back. It also was a comfortable way to spend his tummy time. His great grandfather sent his parents to Love Sac to purchase the chair. They had to order one in but took the floor model, boxed it up and sent it home immediately for his use. I don’t know what they would have done without such a great chair. It made the last 6 weeks much more comfortable for him. Thanks so much Robyn

I JUST HAD TO POST THIS ONE. POOR KID. IT IS THESE KIND OF STORIES THAT REMIND US - IT REALLY, TRULY, IS NOT A DAMN BEANBAG. IF YOU HAVE A GREAT LOVESAC STORY, AND A PICTURE, SEND IT TO ME AT MY PERSONAL WEB ADDRESS: shawnd@sacmanlovegirl.com I’LL MAKE YOU A STAR.

Robyn, I wish the little guy well.

Beanbag Chair Causes Accident on I-15
September 25th, 2006 @ 4:02pm

(KSL News) – The Utah Highway Patrol says a bean bag chair caused a freeway

crash. Troopers say a Love Sac bean bag fell off a truck at 12:45 on
Interstate 15, near the split with I-215. The driver in the truck pulled off

the side and ran through traffic to get it.

UHP says other cars were forced to stop quickly, and many of the vehicles
rear-ended each other.

Several of the drivers involved in the crash had minor injuries; the owner
of the Love Sac was not hurt.

Sgt. Keith Dockstader, Utah Highway Patrol: “We would certainly rather have
a Love Sac run over or even a couch run over rather than people.”

Troopers says the driver who tried to get the bean bag chair was cited for
failing to secure a load.

I AGREE. THIS GUY DOES DESERVE SOMETHING. HE SHOULD CALL ME AT H.Q. AND MAYBE I’LL HOOK HIM UP. THAT REALLY SUCKS. IT’S FUNNY–THEY HIGHWAY PATROLMAN’S COMMENT….I GUESS THIS GUY JUST DIDN’T AGREE…WELL, HE MIGHT HAVE AFTER THE FACT.

Is any publicity really good publicity? I AM glad no one got seriously hurt–what a bummer.

From the Salt Lake Tribune, last Friday

So many of you saw the article in the paper a week ago about the motorist who dropped his LoveSac out on I-15 and caused an accident. No one was killed, thankfully, but so many people saw it and wondered–is any press, really good press? What about this one (below)…

Editorial, Salt Lake Tribune

Here’s another one, albeit local, but a fine example that “LoveSac” is not just a brand of bean-bag, but it is slowly working it’s way into the English language, becoming not just a brand name, but an actual accepted “thing.” I’ve always said that somehow this crazy brand sells to the perverts and the grandma’s and everyone in between…well, looking at the ATTACHED cartoon, from Friday’s Salt Lake Tribune–maybe even the Church accepts us a legitimate item. (This weekend was the worldwide broadcast of the LDS Church’s “General Conference,” where millions of Mormons tune in to watch, and thousands gather at the tabernacle building to hear the leaders of the Church, depicted in suits, speak to the masses–as shown in the cartoon.)

Sometimes I just have to laugh at where this brand ends up.

By the way, I am still taking entries/comments to my previous blog. You can still win the contest if you post!!! I will cut it off on October 15th.

YOUR OPINION WILL AFFECT THE FUTURE: What is alternative furniture?

LoveSac is the alternative to lame furniture. As an iconic brand in this budding category of “Alternative Furniture,” I am curious to hear from YOU, what you think “Alternative Furniture” means. It may sound strange, but, then, can you tell me what alternative music sounds like? … Isn’t that just rock? No? Okay, then, what’s the difference? I think you know it when you hear it.

So, describe for me, YOUR opinion of, what is alternative furniture (in 1000 words or less). The winner will get a free LoveSac Hipster messenger bag–like the one I carry every day to work.

POST YOUR COMMENTS, and, if possible, leave me some way to get a hold of you (in case you win).

Sleeping on the Sac

I was just browsing through photos to put on MySpace when I found this one of most of my children sleeping on the LoveSac. We have even had up to 10 children on it at once watching movies. It is, by far, the most popular seat in the house. Sometimes they slide it near the couch so they can use it as a stunt pad. My autistic son loves the sensation of being thrown into the air and landing on the big fluffy sac.

Anyway, thanks so much for this innovation. I wish I could furnish my whole house with LoveSacs.

A nice ending to heartwarming story…

A few entries ago, back in March, I posted a heartwarming story of a little girl who loved the Sac and it loved her back…..
Our lovely daughter

….In early January of 06 my husband and I bought a love sac at the gateway store in SLC. we had wanted one for some time but did not have the financial means to pay for one. we have faced immense medical debt because of our beautiful daughter, mind you she is worth it. three years ago while pregnant with our third child we found out that she had spinal bifida, and a few other extreme defects in her legs and organs. she has slept in my arms since the day I brought her home [from her surgeries], a long time now, this has grown weary on us the bigger she gets. this all changed when the love sac came home. it sits at the end of our master bedroom bed in front of a TV where my husband and I relax at the end of every day. we hold her there with us instead of in the bed and then leave her to sleep there. she has slept through the night on her own in the love sac every since. her birthday Is coming up in April and we would love to get her a love sac to go in her room that matches her stuff, instead of loosing ours. we want her to move into her own room and gain independence like a child her age should, she has so very little independence or control of it as she relies on us for most every thing considering that she can only walk a few steps with the help of a walker and is in a wheel chair most of the time.

The O’Brien’s

SHAWN: We help out where we can. In fact, we feel very blessed to make such a fun product that actually can make peoples lives more comfortable. As a company/staff we have participated in numerous MS Walks on behalf of one of our earliest and greatest employees diagnosed with it. We have also donated or sold Sacs at cost for many charitable auctions, raising thousands for related charities. We are lucky to have such a product, and I am lucky to have had such a supportive staff over the years. Thank you to the O’briens for sharing your experiences with us, and giving me cause to reflect. Now, on with the rest of the O’briens story…..

Shawn,

I don’t have a digital camera and so I had to take these the old fashion way and then scan them. the first set I took turned out awful and so I threw them away and blah blah blah. sorry. she really does love and sleeps with the pillow often as well. the whole family fights over the blanket. the pic of her with her hand to her chin is her saying thank you to you in sign language. other pics of her playing and getting ready for a nap. thank you again so much we are so grateful for you and your staff. we will never forget. feel free to publish any of the pics that you would like. I hope that you never forget this darling spina bifida girl that you gave a soft and safe place to lay her head. stay in touch if you want and maybe someday you can meet her. thanks again

“I Murdered My LoveSac” - from a customer

“Here is my story of sadness. You may roll on the floor laughing at my expense, and yet inside of you there may be a small hurt. A piece of you may be gone, knowing you nor I will ever again get the joy of diving into my Love Sac.

Let me first tell you about my absolute favorite piece of furniture. I had a Love Sac Super Sac of utmost quality. If you don’t know what a Love Sac is, go to www.lovesac.com. It was enormous, plush and covered with a limited-edition red velvet cover. Anyone who saw it instantly became jealous of my fortune, and I was completely attaced to it. I would rather sleep on the Love Sac than my own bed, and no couch in the world could ever compare to it. It was a thing of beauty, and an inherent part of my personal style. Little in this world did I adore more. A Love Sac will CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

Last night I had to transport my Love Sac across town to my new place. It shouldn’t have been that big of a deal. I used some of my rafting straps to compress the Love Sac down so we could get it out the door. I cleaned my truck bed until it was spotless, and lined it with a tarp to give my Love Sac the ultimate care. We put the Love Sac in the bed, closed the tailgate and I was off. I drove a few miles, got on the interstate and headed toward home. After about 2 miles…

THE LOVESAC LEAPT OUT OF THE BACK OF MY TRUCK!!! I quickly merged left to the shoulder, threw it in reverse and sped back to the scene, jumped out, and watched a group of cars get by with no problems. There was a small group of vehicles looming, and behind it, A BREAK! I could run out and pull it to safety!

Then I saw the 18-wheeler coming. It was in the second lane from the right of a four-lane freeway. Directly in its path was my Love Sac, and it didn’t swerve or slow down. I was standing right there on the shoulder helpless, a mere 20 feet away. And I watched as the 18-wheeler PLOWED my LoveSac, instantly turning itself into a comet of foam particles, spreading my pride and joy over 1000 feet of interstate.

*****

Just like that it was gone. Foam rained down from the sky as if there was a celebration going on. Furniture and memory foam particles and velvet was strewn for 1/4 mile down the road. All I could do was stand there in total shock. And loss.

I guess I am laughing at myself. I never thought there was any way my Love Sac could fly out of my truck. It was huge! And heavy! It took two of us to drag it across the house! I guess I am crying inside. I can never replace the Love Sac I killed. We were meant to be together forever and now it is gone. A part of me died last night there on the side of the interstate.

Thank goodness no cars hit my Love Sac. That could have been terrible. It was very fortunate there. But not with the 18-wheeler. It never stopped, heading off into the darkness as if it had not just crushed the life out of one of my favorite possessions.

Rest in Peace LoveSac. I am so sorry I killed you.

Luke

….Eventually I hope to replace the LoveSac I lost. Financially it’s just not going to happen for a while–I’m a young guy just starting a carreer. “

Pics of my beloved Special Order Red Diego Sac

My Red Diego Sac

My Red Deigo Sac

All that is left

All that is left

NOTE FROM SHAWN: Luke, though you are saddened and ashamed, take comfort in the fact that you are NOT THE FIRST to have lost your Sac from the back of a truck. In fact, 8 years ago, in the earliest days of LoveSac when we were making them in the back room of Intermountain Furniture, I was heading off one afternoon to deliver a MovieSac (then, “TonOLoveSac") to a customer 20 miles down I-15 in Salt Lake City. I placed had the Sac in the back seat of my ‘85 Black Toyota 4-Runner with the top off. I was actually holding onto it with my right hand, feeling it whip around in the topless air-flow when it just, as you say, “leapt out.” The funny thing about mine is–though it jumped at 70 mph, being made of 100% pleather, it just rolled down the shoulder, luckily, and aside from a few scuffs (which easily came off with windex and a sink scrubber, I loaded it back in, delivered it! It was probably one of our 10 total sales that month. Crazy days.

There have been a few more, that I’m aware of. Occasionally, a friend will shoot me a picture from a cell phone of some little honda with a SuperSac strapped to the roof, spotted at a random traffic light. Too funny.

But once, actually, one of our beloved Sac employees had it happen, transporting my MOM’S SuperSac limited edition long-phur cover to a photo shoot! It was instantly demolished by a semi-truck. I can feel your pain, and so can my mom.

LoveSac loves you. Never stop rockin’ the Sac.

LoveSac’s mission: Making People’s Lives More Comfortable. From a customer….

I just wanted to write and tell you how helpful Kelly Hansen has been with a mishap I had with my Love Sac. In short my Love sac is not just a piece of furniture for me due to severe neck problems it is often the only piece of furniture that I can get comfortable with. Seriously if I had enough money I would get the couch and everything else but unfortunately that is not in our budget at all since my husband is on disability so I am sole provider in our household. But after my husband had saved enough money last year to get me one for mother’s day it was the best gift I ever received. It is the only thing that I can find some relief to my constant pain. I sleep in it often.

Anyway this was really supposed to be about Kelly. Unfortunately the love sac was ripped trying to move it into another room so I called your Layton store because of the 2 lifetime warranties. They were extremely nice and polite but told me that they had no power to do anything and the warranty didn’t cover that. I was devastated. But they gave me Kelly’s e-mail address to see if she could do anything. So I e-mailed Kelly and she did inform me that the warranty did not cover human mishaps and such as this but she is going to send me a new cover. I just wanted you know that I know she didn’t have to do anything since it was human caused but she was kind enough to understand my dilemma and go out of her way and above and beyond the call of duty to help. You have no idea how grateful I am to have someone like that working for your company because she truly understands the needs of the customer. I hope you give her some sort of recognition for going above and beyond the call of duty and actually listening to the customer instead of just going with standard position that it was my fault so I am out of luck. You are lucky to have her and obviously smart enough to give her the empowerment to make decisions.

Like I said I would love to furnish my living room in your products but that is impossible. I will be happy to get my Love sac back in working order.

My thanks to Kelly, You and your company

I have received various comments wondering how I can go on with things after so many people and businesses have been affected by LoveSac’s past mistakes. I admit, it has been extremely hard to work through–the hardest time in my life for at least 1000 reasons. The process has been excruciatingly painful for all involved, and every creditor, investor, employee, and even myself have experienced losses beyond difficult to bear. The company simply does not have the means to make everyone whole, but we have done our very best, sparing no effort, to preserve as many jobs as we could, as well as to maximize as much value & return for our creditors as possible. Very simply - we have done everything that we could - everything. I have many, many friends and employees to thank, many who have sacrificed months, years, money, and pride to help see LoveSac through these crazy times. I especially have to thank our loyal customers. And, an apologetic, seemingly futile, yet completely sincere “thank you” to our many creditors, investors and current vendors who have allowed this company to exist, and who continue to pay the price, along with those of us still making it all work. Thank you. No matter how bad times have gotten, LoveSac cannot, will not just roll over and quit. While I live with much regret and sadness for those injured by the Sac, I refuse to allow it to fade into oblivion. Not only are we about to launch some of the coolest new products we EVER have (the PlayerSac, the PillowSac Rocker, and G2 Sactionals–oh, and also the very cool bar stool–coming this fall), but more people are buying Sacs than ever. While many vendors hurt by our situation hate the company and even me, there are still those who continue work with us and support the brand. Some cannot, and that is the hardest part–I am sorry. There is no way to completely make up for past mistakes after a certain point, but we, here at LoveSac are eager give business to any and every vendor, partner, or company that wishes to go forward and try to make some money together, and many are doing so now. I am so grateful for all of the continued customer, investor, and vendor support. Thank you.

THE ROCKER by LoveSac

Even through these crazy times, we continue to invent new cool alternative furniture. We have been working on this one for quite a little while, and testing it in a local store. WOAH, do people love it. Check it out! THE ROCKER by LoveSac is a lightweight-heavy duty metal rocker frame shaped like a piece of Macaroni, with a fabric sheath over it. On top of it you place one of our cool PillowSacs, and you rock away.

The LoveSac Rocker with Puppy Phur PillowSac on top

I’m really only blogging about this one because it is SOOOOOOOO cool. This is a sneak peak. The Rocker comes out in about 4 weeks in LoveSac Life stores everywhere. We already have a small waiting list growing for this one, and supplies will be limited at first - so don’t be the last to get it.

Thanks for all of your love and support. We are doing our best to keep rockin’ the Sac….big things comin’ from LoveSac–believe it or not.

—————– Original Message —————–

Date: Mar 3, 2006 6:02 AM

Hey Dude, I found your page thru lovesac.com

I recently bought a movie sac & sactional
on impulse a few days ago with my girlfriend
at the fashionplace mall when she went into
a that girly lotion smelly store, and the aroma
was so harsh, it was making my head spin.

So i thought that i’d waste some time watching
those videos on a love sac next door.

When she was done, she came over and sat with
me, and we realized that we were more comfortable
than we’ve been in a long time.
(our current couch is too thin for both of us to lay down
together to watch movies)
so we thought we’d get a movie sac for movie time so
we could cuddle.
Then I was showin her the sactional becuse i was seeing
the video of it being assembles in all sorts of ways,
and i was thinking that is neat, also convient for
moving.
and we move alot, and it would be nice not to
have to carry the couch over the fence and thru
here and there…blah blah
so we sat on that too, and found ourselves
most comfortable for reading & lounging.

So we then found ourselves droppin a grand
on our new set up.

I ended up spending some time on the website
and was intrigued by your history, because
i had heard somewhere that you used to make
them for your friends out of random stuff and
what not, and it reminded me of when i was a kid.
me and 2 of my buddies when thru this phase where
we like to jump off houses and we really wanted
polevault landing pads to fall on.
since we couln’t buy any we got my friends tent and
filled it full of what ever we could find.
beanbags, sleeping bags, stuffed animals, pillows,
camping pads, packing peanuts, broken packing foam
etc…

so we made this 10man tent into our stunt pad.
now we could do cool tricks while falling off the roof.

anyway, I read your history, and it reminded of some
fun innovative times.

but more i was impressed with how you tackled you
obsticles, and blazed your own path.
there were so many big things that came up
that most people would have just given up,
figuring success just was not realistic.
but you flew to china knock down doors, and
negoitate your way thru, and found a way to make it happen.

I just found it to be very cool.
and cool to see that you are succesful and still
had your juvinile side w/ the car prank.
it’s a good balance.

sooooo, I just wanted to thank you for the inspiration.
I do a lot of work in the music industry, and with they
way things are you gotta knock down doors, and
create your own path, and convince everybody to
go your way.
You story was motivating to me to keep pluggin
along.

sorry for the long email, but maybe even Shawn gets
bored and needs something random to read too. haha
hit me back if you can.

hey you guys at love sac or should I say you guy, shawn, I have a great story you will want to hear.

Our lovely daughter

in early January of 06 my husband and I bought a love sac at the gateway store in SLC. we had wanted one for some time but did not have the financial means to pay for one. we have faced immense medical debt because of our beautiful daughter, mind you she is worth it. three years ago while pregnant with our third child we found out that she had spinal bifida, and a few other extreme defects in her legs and organs. to make a long story short we traveled to san Francisco to get fetal surgery for her, that is where they operate on the baby while still in the mom, instead of treating her condition after her birth. we lived there for four months with out any income and accruing medical debt. she was born 11 weeks early barely weighing 2 lbs. she is now a thriving 2 year old that brightens our day. she has endured 7 surgeries since birth and even more hospitalizations, with so many more to come. my husband is self employed so insurance is a hassle and she costs us thousands out of our pockets every year. so back to the love sac. she has slept in my arms since the day I brought her home, a long time now, this has grown weary on us the bigger she gets. this all changed when the love sac came home. it sits at the end of our master bedroom bed in front of a TV where my husband and I relax at the end of every day. we hold her there with us instead of in the bed and then leave her to sleep there. she has slept through the night on her own in the love sac every since. her birthday Is coming up in April and we would love to get her a love sac to go in her room that matches her stuff, instead of loosing ours. we want her to move into her own room and gain independence like a child her age should, she has so very little independence or control of it as she relies on us for most every thing considering that she can only walk a few steps with the help of a walker and is in a wheel chair most of the time. we cant really afford another one right now, especially at full price. we got this great discount at the time we purchased ours. so this is our plea for help, please give us a deal, help us get one for our daughter for her birthday. if nothing can be done that’s fine we still wanted you to know about this great story. there is nothing better then hearing her scream love sac as we gently toss her into settle for the night. sometimes stories like this keep you working when it is hard to. I own my own business that is just starting out and sometimes I need a reminder about why I am doing this even if it seems irellevant. have a great day.

LoveSac is in reorganization and will emerge a much stronger, healthier company. We are making great strides towards providing a plan by which the LoveSac brand and stores can provide value for all of those who have supported it and will support the company going forward.

Meanwhile–support the cause. Sacs and Sactionals make the ULTIMATE home theater furniture.
